Day trips on the weekend bring me so much happiness. The 48 hours between workdays is a boxed jewel for me and making use of it is my number one goal. Whether it’s meeting up with friends, the kids or grabbing my guy for an afternoon alone, nothing makes me happier.
I think it might have been GlamAdelaide on Instagram that sparked my interest, and when a beautiful image of a lake house right on my doorstep partnered with great wine, well… we just had to make the trip.
K1 Wines is a world away from suburbia and yet a stone’s throw from home. Kuitpo was my stomping ground for school camps back in the day, but now all grown up, I’ve found a great place to while away a couple of hours without spending a fortune.
I booked a table over the phone during the week just to make sure that there was a spot for us. With the cellar door currently under renovation we were fortunate enough to enjoy the function room laid out with seating to enjoy the views over the lake. At the time of writing, the renovations should be finished with the Cellar Door. The staff were quick to let us know how hard Geoff had been working on the project. It’s a beautiful spot.
What a treat, usually reserved for weddings and functions, the function room has the eagle’s view to the vineyard and overlooks the stunning lake. The crisp winter afternoon light washing over us as we enjoyed a bottle of Gruner Vertliner and our ever-present grazing board.
I confess that I always get too carried away and with the platters arranged from a great list of local cheeses, crackers, fresh bread, prosciutto and olives yet again I’ve gone too large!
My eyes are always bigger than my belly, though on the plus side it just means that we were able take our time and enjoy deep conversation and a glass ofwine. Great value with the wine flight followed by a bottle to enjoy.
Time really does slip away. Even though seatings are limited to 90 minutes, we were lucky enough to stay a little longer as the morning bookings had moved on and we could linger. We ended our afternoon with a taste of K1’s sublime Muscat. My penchant for an evening winter warmer saw a bottle came home in the backseat along with a couple of bottles of Vertliner to tide us over.
Cold winters, open fire and a fine K1 wine. Happy days!
Book a table and enjoy the view.
